One Day Without Metamucil

My day normally starts with one coffee, and then just before nature calls I mix a large teaspoon of Metamucil into a 20 oz glass of water. Then I chase that with another full 20 oz glass. Then it’s off to the races. I’m as regular as a swiss watch. Wham-bamalam-boom and it all comes out in one 5-10 second shot.

Today I was distracted and neglected to perform my morning routine. The result? I’ve had to go three times today. All little dribs and drabs. No wham-bamalam-boom. The problem? The more time spent on the bowl pushing, and the more time spent wiping, puts me at a greater risk to get another hemorrhoid. I won’t be forgetting my routine tomorrow morning, or anytime soon for that matter.

If I were alone on a desert island and could only have one hemorrhoid product – it would be Metamucil. I don’t work for them, I’m not compensated by them, I’m just happy as hell that a simple drink every morning has kept me hemorrhoid free for nearly 5 years.

What is the Best Fiber Supplement?

With so many to choose from, it IS difficult to know which Fiber Supplement is best.

The truth is that there is no best fiber supplement for everyone. What works best for me may not be ideal for you. The best fiber supplement for me is Metamucil Smooth Texture Sugar Free Regular Unflavored Powder. I don’t need any extra sugar in my diet, so I definitely stay away from the sugar-infused versions. I can also live without the artificial sweeteners that are in the flavored versions (such as sugar-free orange, and sugar-free pink lemonade). So I stick with the Unflavored stuff. I do get the “Smooth” version – there is an “Original Coarse Texture” which I have tried, but I did not find that it worked any better than the smooth. The smooth texture is a little easier to gulp down.

I have never tried the Clear and Natural products, which are made from Inulin Fiber. Psillium Fiber works, and with me, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Metamucil Smooth Texture works for me, and that’s all I need to know. I have not tried their Capsules or Health Bars. I invite you to comment if you have tried them.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

It is important to understand what causes your hemorrhoids if you wish to cure and prevent them.

After my 4th and final hemorrhoid in 2011, I decided to get serious about prevention. I was forced to find out what were the root causes of my hemorrhoids. When I was young, I was always moving. In my 20’s I had jobs that were mostly active. Once I hit 30, however, I started working at a desk, sitting more and moving less. First I got fat, then I got hemorrhoids.

Constipation causes hemorrhoids. Diarrhea causes hemorrhoids. Straining to make a bowel movement causes hemorrhoids.

My diet is the Standard American Diet. This low-fiber pig-out is pretty much a recipe for hemorrhoids.  I have never been very good at overhauling my diet. I try to include more fruits and vegetables, but it is a slow change for me, and it is honestly more for the sake of reducing cholesterol.

As far as causes of hemorrhoids are concerned, I am not worried about my diet anymore. I have found that one big glass of metamucil, every day, works perfectly for me. Some days I eat very good, some days not so good. I ate an entire box of girl scout cookies last night! But I drink that glass of metamucil EVERY DAY – and every day I leave a big BM that takes about 20 seconds from squat to wipe. Notice that I don’t use the word “take a dump” – going #2 should be passive, not active. Active straining to poop causes hemorrhoids. Letting it go when it is ready, prevents them.

Coffee and Soda. Honestly, looking back, I am not sure how I survived such a long time without having a single glass of water. I would wake up to coffee, and then alternate between regular and diet soda all day long, not drinking a single drop of water. It seems like common sense to me now, but at one point it did not occur to me, so I will say it for your sake. WATER MOVES POOP. Conversely, lack of water leads to constipation, and constipation causes hemorrhoids. I still drink coffee in the morning, and although I don’t drink soda anymore, I do drink iced tea. But I drink a massive amount of water throughout the day.
